Seydemenukha (Fields of Rest)
This project adopts five parallel lines of walls as a stitching instrument to add life into a landscape of great loss in Kalynivske, Ukraine: formerly known as Seydemenukha, or “fields of rest.” Anchored to an abandoned synagogue, the sole remnant of a pre-Holocaust Jewish community, a new center revives agrarian heritage through architecture. Transforming an architectural line from merely a boundary into a connective seam, the walls act as furrows, creating porous thresholds that divide the center for cultivation, congregation, and craft. Built from regional Pedunculate Oak and local stone, the project respects the history as it rebuilds the contemporary community.
